Osogovo
- Highest point
- Ruen
- Elevation
- 2,251 m
Broad grassy ridges and long open horizons. Quiet enough that you can walk a summer day and meet nobody.
Show this range on the mapHistory and background
Ruen sits directly on the border with North Macedonia, and the summit ridge is shared. Kyustendil below has been a spa town since Roman Pautalia, and the mineral waters are still in use. This was mining country for centuries, and old workings are scattered through the lower valleys.
Getting there
Kyustendil is about 90 km from Sofia by road or rail. A road climbs most of the way to the Osogovo hut area, which shortens the day considerably.
When to go
May to October for comfortable walking. The grassy ridges hold snow later than their modest height suggests, and there is very little shelter once you are on them.
Water
Reasonable at lower levels, sparse on the ridge itself. Fill up before you commit to the crest.
What to be careful of here
- Exposure to weather rather than to drops. The ridge is broad and safe underfoot, but there is nowhere to hide from wind or lightning along its length.
- You are on an international border. Keep to marked paths and carry identification.
