Best hikes near Sofia
Sofia is one of the few European capitals with a real mountain on its doorstep. Vitosha begins where the city ends, Rila is about two hours away by car, and the railway puts Sredna Gora and the Botev massif within reach without one.

On Vitosha by city bus
Vitosha starts at the edge of the city, so this is the one mountain you can reach from central Sofia without a car and be walking within the hour.

City buses run from Sofia to Dragalevtsi, Simeonovo and Zlatnite Mostove. The Simeonovo gondola and Dragalevtsi chairlift operate at weekends. You can leave central Sofia and be walking within an hour without a car, which is close to unique among European capitals.

Rila in a day by car
The highest range in the Balkans is close enough for a long day: the Seven Rila Lakes, Musala and Malyovitsa all start within about two hours of Sofia.
Rila
Borovets is about 70 km from Sofia and the gondola takes you to Yastrebets at 2,369 m, which removes most of the climb to Musala. Panichishte, for the Seven Lakes, is roughly two hours by car. Govedartsi and Malyovitsa are the quieter way in.

By train or a short drive
The railway towards Burgas and the line to Kyustendil put three more ranges within reach, though Botev is a long, hard day.
Sredna Gora
Koprivshtitsa is on the Sofia to Burgas railway and about 90 minutes by car. Panagyurishte, Klisura and Strelcha all serve the range.

Osogovo
Kyustendil is about 90 km from Sofia by road or rail. A road climbs most of the way to the Osogovo hut area, which shortens the day considerably.

Stara Planina
The range runs some 550 km, so there is no single entrance. Kalofer and Karlovo serve the Botev massif and are on the Sofia to Burgas railway. Etropole and Teteven open the western section, Kotel and Sliven the east.

Further away, for a weekend
These are three to four hours from Sofia, which makes them a weekend rather than a day trip.
Pirin
Bansko is the gateway, about 2.5 hours from Sofia. The gondola runs in summer as well as ski season. A rough road climbs to Vihren hut at 1,950 m, which is where most serious days start. Melnik and the Pirin Marble region open the southern end.

Rhodopes
Smolyan, Chepelare, Devin and Shiroka Laka are the usual bases, three to four hours from Sofia and much closer to Plovdiv. A car helps here more than in any other Bulgarian range, because the interest is spread out.

Belasitsa
Petrich is the base, about three hours from Sofia. Kongur and the villages along the northern foot give access to the ridge paths.

Slavyanka
Goleshovo is the usual base, reached via Sandanski and Petrich. This is a long way from Sofia, around four hours, and public transport is thin. Realistically you need a car.

Strandzha
Malko Tarnovo is the interior base; Ahtopol and Sinemorets sit where the forest meets the sea. About four hours from Sofia, or an hour and a half south of Burgas.
