Marble and granite, sharp ridges, and the most serious terrain in the country. Koncheto is a scramble with real exposure, not a walk.

History and background

Pirin National Park has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1983. The range takes its name from Perun, the Slavic god of thunder, which anyone caught on the ridge in an August storm will find apt. Baikushev's pine, near Banderitsa, is a Bosnian pine estimated at over 1,300 years old — older than the Bulgarian state.

Getting there

Bansko is the gateway, about 2.5 hours from Sofia. The gondola runs in summer as well as ski season. A rough road climbs to Vihren hut at 1,950 m, which is where most serious days start. Melnik and the Pirin Marble region open the southern end.

When to go

July to September is the window. Snow lingers in the north cirques into July, and on marble that is a different problem than on grass — it is slick and the runout is rock. Outside that window this becomes a mountaineering range, not a hiking one.

Water

Less reliable than Rila. The limestone and marine marble of the northern section swallows surface water, so fill up at the huts and at Banderishki lakes rather than assuming you will find a stream on the ridge.

What to be careful of here
  • Koncheto is a knife-edge ridge with a fixed cable and a long fall on both sides. It appears on casual route lists as though it were a walk. It is not, and it has killed people.
  • Wet marble is genuinely slippery, far more than the rock appears. A light shower changes the grade of a descent.
  • Rockfall in the Vihren and Kutelo cirques, particularly when there are parties above you.
Routes worth the journey

  • Vihren from Vihren hut

    Hard5-6 hours

    The standard route up the second highest peak in Bulgaria. Steep, rocky, and a genuine mountain day. The northern approach is harder than the summer route and should not be mixed up.

  • Popovo Lake from Bezbog

    Moderate4 hours

    The largest lake in Pirin, reached from the Bezbog chairlift. The gentlest way to see high Pirin without committing to the marble ridges.

  • Koncheto ridge

    Alpine7-9 hours

    Exposed scrambling on a metre-wide crest, protected by cable. Only in settled weather, only with a head for heights, and never as a first outing in Pirin.
