History and background

This is the cradle of the April Uprising of 1876, the rebellion that led, through its suppression, to Bulgarian liberation two years later. Koprivshtitsa and Panagyurishte at its foot are preserved revival-era towns and among the most rewarding places to end a walk anywhere in the country.

Getting there

Koprivshtitsa is on the Sofia to Burgas railway and about 90 minutes by car. Panagyurishte, Klisura and Strelcha all serve the range.

When to go

Walkable most of the year. The forest cover makes it pleasant in summer heat when the open ridges elsewhere are punishing, and snow rarely closes the paths for long.

Water

Plentiful. Streams and village fountains throughout, and you are never far from a settlement.

What to be careful of here
  • Genuinely few. The main risk is complacency about weather on Bogdan itself, which is more exposed than the surrounding forest suggests.
