Hiking in Bulgaria in May: where to go

In May, 7 of the 10 main hiking ranges we cover are at their best: Rhodopes, Vitosha, Osogovo, Slavyanka, Belasitsa, Sredna Gora and Strandzha. Also walkable: Rila and Stara Planina. Demanding: Pirin.

    A UNESCO World Heritage site, and the spiritual centre of the country for a thousand years.

    A 2,290-metre summit you can reach by city bus, above unique periglacial boulder fields.

    Red sandstone towers up to 200 metres tall, with a fortress built straight into them.

Before you go in May

Snow lingers on north-facing slopes, in the high cirques and on passes well into spring. On high routes, check conditions before you set off and turn back at snowfields you are not equipped for. The lower ranges are at their best now.
