About this place
The Trigradska river cuts a gorge barely wide enough for the road, with walls rising 300 metres on either side, then vanishes entirely into a cave mouth. Inside the Devil's Throat it falls 42 metres into an underground chamber large enough to hold a cathedral, producing the noise that gives the place its name.
The strange part is what happens next. Nothing that goes into the siphon has ever come out. Dye tests and objects dropped in have never been recovered downstream, which is the origin of the local claim that this is where Orpheus descended into the underworld to find Eurydice — the whole Rhodope range is Orpheus country, and here the geography makes the myth feel almost reasonable.
You enter through a man-made tunnel and climb 301 steps back out beside the roaring water. The chamber is genuinely impressive and genuinely loud. Take a layer; it is cold and wet inside whatever the temperature outside.
When to go
At its best in May, June, July, August, September and October.
The most year-round range in the country. Lower routes and the gorges are walkable in every month, and the forest gives shelter that the high ranges do not. Autumn, when the beech turns, is the best of it.
Getting there
Smolyan, Chepelare, Devin and Shiroka Laka are the usual bases, three to four hours from Sofia and much closer to Plovdiv. A car helps here more than in any other Bulgarian range, because the interest is spread out.
Water
Generally good, but this is karst country — water disappears underground and reappears far away, so a stream on the map is not a guarantee on the ground.
What to watch out for
- Golyam Perelik itself carries a military installation and the summit is not freely accessible. Plan for Snezhanka or the surrounding tops instead.
- Caves and gorges here are the real objective danger. Devil's Throat and the Trigrad gorge are managed sites — do not enter cave systems without a guide.
